GTA 6 NPCs Have Around 600,000 Animations and Unique Personality Traits

Rockstar Games has revealed just how much work has gone into GTA 6's pedestrians, with around 600,000 animations and personality traits that determine how NPCs react to players.

The new details come from Edge Magazine's extensive GTA 6 preview following a visit to Rockstar North.

Rather than filling Leonida with interchangeable background characters, Rockstar wants its pedestrians to feel more like actual people.

GTA 6 Has Around 600,000 NPC Animations

According to Edge, Rockstar has created approximately 600,000 animations while building GTA 6's NPC population.

That doesn't mean there are 600,000 individual characters or that every pedestrian has completely unique animations.

Instead, the figure refers to the enormous animation library created for the game's NPC systems.

For comparison, previous reports put GTA 5 at around 55,000 animations and Red Dead Redemption 2 at roughly 300,000.

GTA 6 therefore represents another major increase in the amount of animation work Rockstar is using to make its world feel alive.

NPCs Have Different Personalities

The bigger change may be how those animations are combined with NPC behavior.

Pedestrians have personality traits that help determine how they respond to different situations.

Rockstar considers factors such as:

  • Temperament

  • Aggression

  • Location

  • What the NPC has already witnessed

  • How the player has behaved toward them

This means two pedestrians may react completely differently to the same situation.

One person might run away from Jason or Lucia, while another could become aggressive or even reach for a weapon.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that developers actively considered how many people in a particular area would challenge the player, become violent or attempt to defend themselves.

Different Areas of Leonida Have Different People

NPC behavior also changes depending on where players are in Leonida.

Rockstar has designed different neighborhoods around their own demographic and professional characteristics.

That means crowds in central Vice City won't necessarily behave exactly like people found in rural communities, coastal towns or quieter residential areas.

This should help different parts of the map feel distinct beyond simply having different buildings and scenery.

Rockstar Created a Team Specifically for NPCs

The system became so ambitious that Rockstar established a dedicated team in Los Angeles consisting of writers, directors and producers focused on background characters.

Their job wasn't simply to create different faces and clothing.

The team worked on pedestrian personalities, behaviors and how characters should react to the situations happening around them.

It's an unusual amount of effort for NPCs that players may only encounter once.

NPCs Can React to What They Have Seen

Another interesting detail is that NPC reactions can take previous observations into account.

For example, someone who has already watched the player behaving aggressively could react differently during a later interaction.

However, this shouldn't be confused with a confirmed permanent memory system.

Rockstar has not said that every pedestrian can remember Jason or Lucia for days, recognize them indefinitely or develop long-term relationships with them.

What has been confirmed is more limited: NPC behavior can consider what they have witnessed and how the player has treated them.

GTA 6 Should Feel Less Predictable

This system could make ordinary exploration much more interesting.

In older GTA games, pointing a weapon at pedestrians often produced relatively predictable reactions.

GTA 6 appears to be creating a much wider range of possible responses.

A random interaction might end peacefully, cause someone to run away, start a fight or escalate into something much larger depending on the people involved.

That fits Rockstar's broader goal of making the open world itself an important part of the experience rather than simply a map connecting story missions.

Is Rockstar Using AI for GTA 6 NPCs?

The complexity of the system may lead some players to assume Rockstar is using generative AI to control pedestrians.

There is currently no evidence that this is the case.

The reporting describes a carefully designed system built by writers, directors, animators, producers and other developers.

Rockstar has not confirmed that NPCs use large language models, generate unlimited conversations or independently invent their own behavior.

The impressive part is what Rockstar is achieving through its existing animation and behavioral systems.

600,000 Animations Are Only Part of the Story

The number itself is impressive, but GTA 6's NPC system appears to be about much more than animation quantity.

Rockstar is combining hundreds of thousands of animations with personality traits, location-specific populations and context-sensitive reactions.

That could make simply walking around Vice City entertaining even when players aren't completing missions.

With GTA 6 launching on November 19, 2026, we'll soon see how much difference these systems make once millions of players begin interacting with Leonida at the same time.
