GTA 6 Relationship System Revealed: Jason and Lucia Have Four Romance Levels
GTA 6 will let players influence the relationship between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos through a four-point closeness system, with everyday activities helping strengthen their bond.
The new details come from Edge Magazine’s GTA 6 feature, which revealed that the relationship between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos is more interactive than Rockstar has previously shown.
Instead of their romance developing only through scripted cutscenes, players can actively influence how close the two protagonists become.
GTA 6 Has a Four-Level Relationship System
Jason and Lucia’s closeness is measured on a four-point scale.
The relationship improves when the pair spend time together in the open world, with confirmed examples including:
- Walking along the beach
- Cycling together
- Working out at the gym
- Driving around Leonida together
The exact names of the four levels and what each one unlocks have not yet been revealed.
Rockstar’s Rob Nelson previously explained that simply playing through story missions may not be enough to maintain their romantic relationship. Players who want the romance to develop will need to spend some time together outside the main missions.
Romance Is Optional
One important detail is that Rockstar is not forcing players to engage heavily with the romance system.
Nelson has said players who are interested in Jason and Lucia as a couple can nurture the relationship, while those who are mainly interested in missions, crime and exploration can largely leave the romantic side alone.
Jason and Lucia will still remain connected through the main story and continue working together as partners in crime.
So while their romantic closeness can change, players cannot simply separate them completely and continue the story as unrelated characters.
Their Relationship Can Affect the Story
Rockstar has confirmed that nurturing or neglecting the relationship will have an impact on how Jason and Lucia’s story develops.
Nelson described the pair as beginning the game wanting to make their relationship work, but maintaining that connection becomes partly the player’s responsibility.
Exactly how far those consequences go remains unknown.
Rockstar has not confirmed that the highest relationship level unlocks a unique ending, nor has it said that a low level automatically results in a breakup or tragic outcome.
Can Jason and Lucia Get Married?
This remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
During Edge’s interview, Nelson was asked whether Jason and Lucia could eventually get married.
He refused to confirm or deny it.
That does not mean marriage is confirmed.
There is currently no official confirmation of weddings, marriage licenses or marriage-specific missions in GTA 6.
However, the fact that Rockstar is keeping the answer secret has naturally created speculation about how far the relationship system can go.
More Than Just Traditional “Dating”
The system appears to focus less on traditional dating missions and more on simply spending time together.
Earlier Rockstar interviews mentioned activities such as walking, holding hands, taking trips, committing crimes together and exploring the State of Leonida.
This approach should make the relationship feel more naturally integrated into the open world.
You might improve Jason and Lucia’s bond simply by going for a drive, exercising together or spending time exploring Vice City rather than selecting a specific “date” mission from a menu.
A Big Change From GTA 5
GTA 5 featured three protagonists whose relationships were mostly controlled by scripted story events.
GTA 6 takes a different approach by giving the player some control over the emotional connection between its two leads.
This makes everyday activities more meaningful because something as simple as a walk on the beach or gym session can contribute to their relationship.
It also fits Rockstar’s broader goal of making free-roam gameplay feel connected to the main story rather than completely separate from it.
Jason and Lucia Are Still Partners in Crime
Regardless of how much players invest in the romance system, Jason and Lucia remain at the center of GTA 6’s story.
Their relationship may become stronger or weaker, but the circumstances of the narrative keep them working together for most of the game.
What remains unknown is just how much those relationship choices can change their eventual fate.
With GTA 6 launching on November 19, 2026, players will soon find out how much control Rockstar actually gives them over the couple’s future.
