Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will not feature microtransactions or generative AI. However, players should probably expect a very different approach once the next version of GTA Online eventually arrives.

There are few topics in the gaming industry that generate as much controversy as microtransactions and generative AI. Both have become increasingly common in recent years, but neither has been embraced by everyone. Microtransactions are often criticized for pushing players toward additional spending, while generative AI remains controversial because of concerns surrounding creative ownership, jobs, and its environmental impact.

That makes Rockstar’s latest confirmation particularly interesting. With GTA 6 expected to be one of the biggest game releases in years, the studio has now made it clear that players won't have to deal with either of these features in the main game.

During an episode of Kinda Funny, hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller asked Rockstar North co-president Rob Nelson directly whether generative AI or microtransactions would be part of GTA 6. The answer was remarkably straightforward: no to both.

The decision to leave generative AI out of GTA 6 will likely be welcomed by many players, especially as the technology continues to spark debate throughout the gaming industry. Some companies are actively integrating AI into their development tools, while others have taken a much more cautious approach. Valve, for example, requires developers to disclose certain uses of AI-generated content on Steam and expects games to comply with copyright rules.

Microtransactions are a slightly more complicated issue.

Players have generally become accustomed to in-game purchases in free-to-play titles such as Fortnite, where optional spending is a major part of the business model. The reaction tends to be much more negative when similar systems appear in a premium game that already costs a significant amount of money.

For GTA 6 itself, however, Rockstar appears to be keeping things simple. The single-player game won't include microtransactions, which isn't particularly surprising considering the premium price attached to the title.

The bigger question is what happens with GTA Online.

The current GTA Online has become an enormous source of recurring revenue for Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Its long-term success has demonstrated just how profitable an online GTA experience can be, and there's little reason to believe Take-Two will simply walk away from that model.

Instead, it seems almost inevitable that a new version of GTA Online will eventually accompany GTA 6. And while Rockstar hasn't officially revealed all the details surrounding that future online experience, players shouldn't be shocked if microtransactions once again become a central part of it.

So, while GTA 6 itself appears to be staying away from both generative AI and microtransactions, that doesn't necessarily mean Rockstar is abandoning either concept altogether. The single-player experience may remain free from them, but the future of GTA Online could tell a very different story.
