GTA 6 Won’t Let You Simply Rush From Mission to Mission, Rockstar Says

GTA 6 will change the familiar Rockstar mission structure by occasionally forcing players to spend time in the open world before the main story can continue.

In previous Grand Theft Auto games, it was often possible to finish one story mission and immediately head toward the next mission marker.

GTA 6 will still have traditional story missions, but Rockstar wants the time between them to feel more meaningful.

According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, there will be moments when Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos need money before the mission flow can move forward.

Money Will Actually Matter in GTA 6

Nelson says Rockstar has made money more important to GTA 6's story than it was in previous games.

At certain points, players will have to go out into the world and earn cash before continuing with the main storyline.

Rockstar has already given examples of how this can be done, including:

  • Stealing cars and selling them

  • Robbing stores and businesses

  • Finding robbery targets around the world

  • Selling valuable stolen items

  • Taking part in other criminal opportunities across Leonida

Instead of these activities existing purely as optional side content, some of them will directly support progression through the story.

Rockstar Wants Players to Explore Leonida

This system appears to be part of Rockstar's attempt to make players spend more time actually living inside GTA 6's open world.

The fictional State of Leonida contains far more than traditional mission markers.

Players can explore Vice City, commit robberies, steal vehicles, interact with NPCs, visit businesses, participate in activities and simply spend time with Jason or Lucia.

Rockstar wants these moments to feel connected to the characters and their situation rather than like something completely separate from the main campaign.

Nelson has explained that Jason and Lucia are constantly trying to make money and improve their situation, so committing crimes in free roam naturally fits into their story.

You Won’t Always Go Straight to the Next Mission

That means GTA 6 may occasionally create deliberate pauses in the campaign.

Instead of:

Mission → next mission → next mission

the progression could sometimes look more like:

Mission → explore Leonida → earn money → prepare → next mission

It doesn't mean every mission will require players to grind for cash.

Rather, Rockstar is introducing moments where players are encouraged to interact with other systems before progressing further.

It is somewhat similar to how previous Rockstar games occasionally required certain skills, equipment or progression before specific missions became available, but GTA 6 appears to integrate the idea much more deeply into its open world.

The Open World Is Part of the Story

One of Rockstar's biggest goals with GTA 6 appears to be reducing the distinction between story content and free-roam gameplay.

Jason and Lucia can commit crimes together, spend time together, visit different locations and explore Leonida even when they are not participating in a traditional scripted mission.

Activities such as robberies may therefore serve several purposes at once.

You could be earning money for the next part of the story, improving Jason and Lucia's financial situation, discovering a new location and triggering an unexpected event all during the same trip.

This approach could make GTA 6 feel considerably less structured than GTA 5, even though traditional story missions are still a major part of the game.

GTA 6 Is Moving Away From Rockstar’s Old Formula

Rockstar has used variations of its mission-marker structure for decades, but GTA 6 appears to be experimenting with a more systemic approach.

The goal is not to remove scripted missions. Rockstar is instead trying to make everything that happens between those missions feel just as important.

If it works as intended, players might occasionally start the game planning to continue the story, only to spend the next several hours stealing cars, making money, exploring Vice City and getting into completely unexpected situations.

And that seems to be exactly what Rockstar wants.
