GTA 6 Sparks Debate Among Miami Beach Officials Over $3 Million Marketing Campaign
GTA 6 probably does not need much help generating hype, but Rockstar Games and Take-Two are still planning a major real-world marketing push ahead of launch. One of those campaigns has now caused a heated debate in Miami Beach.
Rockstar is reportedly preparing to spend around $3 million on GTA 6 promotion in Miami Beach, bringing Vice City-inspired advertising into the real-world location that heavily influenced the fictional city.
Not everyone in Miami Beach was happy with the idea.
During a September 10 meeting, city commissioners debated whether Miami Beach should allow itself to be associated with an adults-only game built around crime, violence, and other controversial themes. The final vote was extremely close, with commissioners voting 4-3 to move forward with negotiations for the campaign.
Some Officials Didn’t Want Miami Beach Associated With GTA
Those opposing the proposal argued that Grand Theft Auto’s reputation could conflict with the image Miami Beach is trying to promote.
Commissioner David Suarez was among those who raised concerns about GTA’s depiction of criminal activity, including violence against civilians and police officers, car theft, drug activity, and other illegal behavior.
The concern was that allowing official GTA 6 promotion around Miami Beach could create an unwanted connection between the city and the game’s criminal themes.
Others Said It’s Just a Video Game
Other commissioners saw things differently.
Supporters argued that GTA 6 is fictional and that people are perfectly capable of separating a video game from the real city that inspired it.
They also pointed to the financial benefits of the campaign.
With Rockstar’s proposal reportedly worth around $3 million, some officials felt that turning down the opportunity would mean rejecting a significant amount of revenue over concerns about fictional content.
The proposed campaign is also expected to be relatively subtle.
Ideas discussed include GTA VI and Vice City branding appearing on privately operated beach chairs and umbrellas rather than major city buildings or official municipal property.
The Vote Came Down to 4-3
After a divided discussion, the Miami Beach City Commission voted four in favor and three against allowing negotiations to continue.
That does not mean a final $3 million contract was officially signed at the meeting. Instead, the vote gave city officials permission to continue working out the details with Rockstar’s marketing representatives.
The campaign could reportedly begin in October 2026 and continue through the end of the year.
Vice City Is Starting to Take Over Real-Life Miami
The debate shows just how unusual GTA 6’s marketing campaign is becoming.
Vice City has been inspired by Miami for decades, but now Rockstar is beginning to reverse that relationship by bringing Vice City branding into the real world.
With GTA 6 promotion already appearing around Miami and more campaigns expected ahead of launch, Rockstar appears ready to turn parts of South Florida into a real-world extension of Leonida.
Even if local officials do not all agree on whether that is a good idea, the extremely close vote shows just how valuable the GTA 6 marketing machine has become before the game has even launched.
