GTA 6 Has an Entire Writing Team Dedicated to NPC Conversations
Rockstar Games is taking NPC dialogue in GTA 6 much further than you might expect.
In a recent interview with LOVE Magazine, Rockstar developers revealed that the studio had a dedicated writers’ room in Los Angeles working specifically on pedestrian dialogue for GTA 6.
That means the random people walking around Vice City and the wider state of Leonida aren’t just an afterthought. Rockstar has put serious effort into making the conversations happening around the player feel natural and believable.
Thousands of NPCs to Bring Leonida to Life
Rockstar’s goal is to create a world where conversations are constantly happening around you.
You might be walking down a crowded street in Vice City and hear several different conversations at once. But if you decide to stop next to a particular group of NPCs and listen, Rockstar wants their conversation to actually make sense and feel like something real people would be talking about.
Considering GTA players already spend plenty of time following random NPCs just to see what they’ll do, this could make exploring GTA 6 even more interesting.
It also gives us another indication of just how much detail Rockstar is putting into Leonida.
Rockstar Is Constantly Refining GTA 6
The interview also provided some insight into how Rockstar has been developing the game.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that GTA 6 has been developed through repeated eight-week milestones. Different parts of the game are reviewed, feedback is collected and the team continues refining them.
That process has apparently been repeated over several years.
It’s a huge amount of work, but considering the level of detail Rockstar is aiming for, it starts to make sense why GTA 6 has taken so long to develop.
GTA 6 Could Have Rockstar’s Most Believable Open World Yet
NPC dialogue might sound like a relatively small feature compared to the map, vehicles, missions or story, but it’s exactly this type of detail that can make an open world feel alive.
GTA 5 already featured plenty of strange and funny pedestrian interactions, but GTA 6 appears to be taking that idea significantly further.
If Rockstar manages to combine thousands of believable NPC interactions with the density and detail we’ve already seen from Vice City and Leonida, simply walking around the GTA 6 map could become an experience of its own.
And knowing GTA players, it probably won’t take long before someone spends hours following random NPCs around the map just to document everything they say.
What are you most excited to explore when you finally get into GTA 6’s open world?
